About this segment
In this segment, Dr. Heber describes the system of medical care at UCLA's Center for Human Nutrition -- a vertically-integrated approach with a foundation based on portion control, exercise, behavior/lifestyle change, and trigger food/relapse prevention.
Other weapons in the UCLA armamentarium include medications (e.g., appetite suppressants, satiety agents, lipase inhibitors) and gastric surgery for severe obesity.
Dr. Heber explains that some people gain weight more readily than others, though we're all genetically hard-wired to hold onto fat and calories.
He also notes that "eating in moderation" doesn't work for patients with obesity; that drugs alone will never be a magic bullet; and that long-term success requires careful attention to diet, exercise, and lifestyle change.
